Shere Hite and Terri Apter explore the reasons behind female rivalry.
The image of women rivals – claws out, nails painted red – is a common stereotype. Cliches such as ‘A woman will always stab another woman in the back over a man’ or ‘you can’t trust a woman in the office’ are well-known. But according to the internationally renowned cultural historian and gender expert Shere Hite, we’ve completely misunderstood the nature of female competition. Contrary to popular ideas, female rivalry is not about competition over a man. She’ll be sharing her thesis with Terri Apter, social psychologist at Newnham College, Cambridge, and author of The Sister Knot.
