Visual
Mary Beale 17 July 2007
Mary Beale by Mary Beale © National Portrait Gallery, London. This portrait can be seen at The National Portrait Gallery in London.
What will happen to the first British female professional painter’s studio?

Mary Beale painted the great and the good of 17th century England. She also painted herself and made intimate and sympathetic portraits of her husband and sons. Due to her exceptional gift she was the family’s breadwinner. With her home and studio in Hampshire at the centre of a controversial development scheme, Miriam talks to art historians Helen Draper and Sir Roy Strong about Mary Beale’s place in the history of British art and the efforts to preserve her 17th century residence.
