A new art work at the Manchester International Festival.
Girls from all walks of life make up Manchester’s Girls Choir. They don’t have to prove themselves at audition in order to join as anyone is welcome. Yet the choir has won prizes all over the world for the quality of its performances. Now it’s the subject of a new art work premiered at Manchester’s International Festival. ‘The Assembly’ by the artist Rachel Davies is on at the city’s Cornerhouse Arts Centre. She was a member of the choir in the 1980’s. She traced former members, who helped her create a homage to their choir mistress, Audrey Jones. Judy Merry went to meet them and to speak to present day members of the choir.
