Prodigious Children 29 June 2007
Nikita Lalwani
What does it mean to be a child prodigy?

Rumi is a superstar at maths. Hot-housed by her father, she takes to chewing cumin seeds in an effort to pass her maths ‘A’ level and get to Oxford at the age of fifteen. She’s the heroine of a new novel ‘Gifted’. But what does it really mean to be “gifted” – and what’s it like for real-life child prodigies? Jane is joined by the author of the novel, Nikita Lalwani, and the talented violinist Chloe Hanslip, who was herself a prodigy, to discuss being very talented – and very young.

Chloe Hanslip will be playing at the Cheltenham Music Festival on 4th July. She will be performing the Barber violin concerto in the festival’s opening concert at Cheltenham Town Hall with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Gifted by Nikita Lalwani is published by Penguin Viking
