Award-winning businesswoman and pioneer in fair trade fashion.
Described as a pioneer in fair trade fashion, Carry Somers provides a living wage for hundreds of South American women, from a shop in a Derbyshire market town. It all started with a research trip to Ecuador. Carry was planning to study for a PhD, but instead she set up Pachacuti. - a business employing local women to make hats, knitwear and accesssories. She wanted to redress the economic balance for the women – giving them the profits and cutting out the middlemen. Fifteen years later, she works with some eight hundred weavers, knitters and embroiderers. She’s just been honoured with an ethical business award from the Federation of Small Businesses.
