Here’s an old joke "What do you call people who use natural family planning? – Parents”. According to new research, however, the natural family planning method is as effective as taking the contraceptive pill. Professor Petra Frank-Hermann, from the Department of Gynaecological Endocrinology at the University of Heidelberg, used the symptothermal method (STM) that enables women to accurately identify their most fertile period by measuring their temperature and observing their cervical secretions. She discovered that when the method was used properly, the pregnancy rate for women was only 0.4%. But are clinicians making women aware of this method of contraception and is it really a viable alternative for busy women who may not have the time or patience to check the signs of their fertility?
