Cooped Up and Acting Out - Teenagers Behaving Badly 21 Feb 2007
Teenagers playing computer games
As more schools ban old-fashioned playground games, we worry about our children missing out on the rough and tumble of conkers, tag, and snow-ball fights on the way home. But should we be more worried about the effect a risk-averse society has on their behaviour? Are today’s teenagers suffering from ‘cabin fever’ – the result of a childhood spent mostly indoors, with much of their social life played out in the virtual world of the chat room?

Tim Gill, former director of Play England, believes life is getting harder for children from all backgrounds, as they lack the opportunities to learn how to regulate their own behaviour without adult intervention. And we ask Sarah Newton, author of 'Help! My Teenager is an Alien', if modern life compounds the problem – do busy working parents take their frustrations out on the children?

'Help My Teenager is an Alien' by Sarah Newton is published by Harper Collins, ISBN: 978-0-718-14971-0.
