International
Female Peacekeepers 29 Jan 2007
Last year, the first female head of state in Africa took office in Liberia. Today, the United Nations’ first all-female peacekeeping force arrives in the capital, Monrovia, to bring increased stability to a country which has suffered years of a civil war which claimed the lives of a quarter of a million people. So what is the rationale behind an all-female peacekeeping unit? And do women-only units represent a step forward, or a way for women to participate in armed combat and peacekeeping operations – without commanding men? To discuss this issue, Martha is joined by Ben Malor, spokesperson for the UN in Liberia and Janine Di Giovanni, Senior Foreign Correspondent for the Times, who has covered the conflicts in both Kosovo and Liberia.
