Around 15% of children are thought to suffer from anxiety disorders, whether it’s a fear of dogs or spiders, or more general ‘worries’. Serious anxiety problems can affect relationships with friends and family and if untreated can often persist into adulthood. But there are practical ways that parents can tackle their childrens’ anxiety. Using the techniques of cognitive behavioural therapy, Dr Cathy Creswell, Clinical Psychologist at the Child Anxiety Disorders Research Clinic at Reading University, has been enabling parents to become their child’s therapist and help their children to sort real dangers from imaginary ones.
Overcoming Your Child's Fears and Worries by Cathy Creswell and Lucy Willetts is published by Constable and Robinson. ISBN 9781845290863Young Minds (children's mental health charity)Disclaimer
