Social
Prison Families 5 Dec 2006
When a parent goes to prison, children are of course especially vulnerable. And even after the parent has finished their sentence, their children are as much in need of ongoing support as the ex-offender.

Of course one of the most important support groups is other family members often grandparents. But naturally, when the parent has served their term, their feelings of gratitude towards family members who’ve stood in for them can be mixed with resentment.

Margaret has four children and when her oldest child, twenty-three year old Lia, was sent to prison for drug using, Lia’s daughter, Sam, went to live with her grandmother. Lia finished her six month sentence almost two years ago and Judi Herman spoke to Lia and Margaret about family life during and after the time she spent in prison.
