International
Female Genital Mutilation 27 Nov 2006
Top Muslim scholars from around the world, including conservative clerics from Egypt and Africa, gathered at a conference in Cairo last week to speak out against female genital mutilation. Practised across 28 African and Arab countries, with more than 120 million women believed to have undergone the procedure, it has often mistakenly been associated with Islam. Martha will be joined by Moushira Khattab, Secretary General of Egypt’s National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, and Adwoa Kwateng-Kluvitse from the organisation FORWARD, to discuss the importance of the conference’s message, and explore how this cultural practice has been mixed up with religion.
