Maggie O’Farrell 10 October 2006
Author Maggie O’Farrell talks to Ritula Shah about her new novel The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox.

It tells the story of a headstrong teenager in 1930’s Edinburgh sent to a mental instituition for refusing to conform to the society she is growing up in.

During ten years of research for the book, Maggie O’Farrell was shocked to discover how common Esme’s tragic story is in real life and began to wonder how her own fate may have been very different had she been born in a different time.

The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox published by Headline Review ISBN 0-7553-0843-3
