History
Shostakovich's women 27 Sep 2006
Dimitri Shostakovich is one of the most talked about composers of the 20th century. His opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk was condemned in the Stalinist era as being 'muddle instead of music' and he waited for his arrest at night out on the landing by the lift, so that his family wouldn't be disturbed.

To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, Jenni is joined by Shostakovich experts John Riley and Elizabeth Wilson to talk of the women in his life and works, the music that was inspired by his female muses and his representation of women.
