The growing phenomenon of ‘mushroom orphans’ |

Since Latvia joined the European Union in 2004, thousands of migrant workers, mostly women, have travelled to Ireland to work, many of them picking mushrooms. The children who are left behind with relatives or friends are referred to as 'mushroom orphans'. The phenomenon has become so widespread that the Migrants Rights Centre in Ireland has set up a special mushroom workers' support group. As well as hearing from women who have travelled from Latvia to Ireland to pick mushrooms, and the families they have left behind, Jenni will be talking to their representative, herself a former mushroom picker, and the Latvian Foreign Minister, to explore what can be done to support these women and their families.Migrants Rights Centre of IrelandDisclaimer
