Bear farms in China 23 Jun 2006
Jill Robinson is credited as the first westerner to discover Chinese Bear bile farms in the early 1990s. In 1985 she was a secretary in London when her then husband suggested they move to Hong Kong. On her arrival she became involved in campaigning for animal welfare, and was particularly inspired by the plight of the Chinese Moon Bears, whose bile is extracted for use in traditional Chinese medicine.

She set up Animals Asia Foundation to continue her campaign, and in 1992 was awarded an MBE for ‘Services to Animals’. In December 2005 she secured MEP support to end bear bile farming by the 2008 Olympics, and is currently involved in negotiations with the Chinese government to secure their agreement.

Jill talks to Ritula about the bears, campaigning, and negotiating with the Chinese government with no political experience.
