Male Characters in Pre-School TV 12 June 2006
Underground Ernie
A new animation series for pre-school children called ‘Underground Ernie’ began last week on Cbeebies and BBC2. Ernie joins the ranks of Thomas the Tank Engine, Postman Pat, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam, all programmes with a strong male lead.  They do have female characters but they tend to take submissive roles.

The commissioning guidelines for Cbeebies stress that programmes should "steer away from 'girl led' content" as they need to attract more boys to the network.  So why do they have this policy and what message is this sending out to pre-school children? Ritula is joined by Kay Benbow, Head of Cbeebies Production, Animation and Acquisitions and Dr Jackie Marsh, Reader in Education at the University of Sheffield.
