International
Widows and Armed Conflict 30 May 2006
Armed conflict in countries like Iraq , Nepal , Sri Lanka and Liberia has caused a dramatic escalation in the number of widows worldwide. In these countries, widows often lose their status and are abused and victimised.

Lily Thapa is a widow from Nepal where she runs a charity for others in the same situation. She is attending a conference at Wilton Park in Sussex today to highlight the vulnerability of widows and to ask whether international law can provide them with adequate protection during times of conflict.

She tells Jenni about her experiences and is joined by Margaret Owen from Widows for Peace and Democracy to discuss how the plight of widows might be improved.
