Why have the numbers been rising?
Over a million women of working age now claim incapacity benefits. This is more than the number of women who are lone parents on Income Support and far more than the number of unemployed women on Jobseeker's Allowance. Incapacity claimants used to be thought of as predominantly male, but the number of women claimants has been rising, and among the under-60s, they now almost equal the number of men. Donald Houston, Senior lecturer in Economic Geography at Dundee University is one of authors of a new report ‘Women on Incapacity Benefit’. He joins Jane along with Kate Welch, Chief Executive of Acumen Development Trust to explore why are so many more women are claiming, and what can be done to help those who are able to work get back into the labour market.Geography and GenderDisclaimer
