We’ve heard recently that Cher’s daughter Chastity is to have a sex change and live as a man. Cher has expressed her support for her daughter’s decision, and praised her courage. But what makes a man, and what makes a woman? How important is our biology and how important are our experiences in shaping our gender? And why do many people feel compelled to live as another sex – even to the point of undergoing long and difficult treatment?
