Work
The politics of the supermarket check-out 24th March 2009
Supermarket check-out
The trials and tribulations of the check-out worker

When was the last time you spared a word for the person working at the supermarket check-out? Did you even acknowledge their presence? Well the women who work on check-outs (and they usually are women) are fighting back via a special website where they dish the dirt on customers' rudeness. To discuss why the check-out causes such unpleasantness and stress Jane is joined by Rachel Bowlby, author of Carried Away: The Invention of Modern Shopping, and by Sandy, who worked on a check-out for 15 years.

Carried Away: The Invention of Modern Shopping by Rachel Bowlby is published by Faber and Faber, ISBN-10: 0571193072
