Liverpool City Council composer in residence.
Despite the fact that Emily Howard decided not to study music at university, she is now one of this country’s most exciting young composers. Since 2004, she has been Liverpool City Council composer in residence and last year she won a £45,000 Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award – the richest prize given to composers in this country. Emily has written for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras and last year she composed Liverpool – The World in One City which was performed by a choir of 400 school children, the Liverpool Youth Orchestra and clarinettist Mark Simpson (BBC Young Musician of the Year 2006). Emily joins Jenni to talk about her music and the challenges of being the composer in residence for the European Capital of Culture.
