The future of family games 30 Jan 2009
Are fitness simulators the way ahead?

A quarter of British homes now contain a Nintendo Wii video games console. With sales figures continuing to rise despite the recession. The latest annual figures show that video games, once the preserve of men, are now increasingly appealing to women and older gamers. Women are thought to have been won round particularly by the Nintendo Wii Fit because it’s a computer game they can easily play alongside their children. Playing on Wii Fit and Wii Sport has become the latest thing for families to do together. The Wii allows players to use a hand held controller to simulate a sport such as tennis, golf or bowls, pretend to ski jump or even play the ukulele. But in the midst of an alleged epidemic of child obesity is playing virtual as opposed to real tennis really such a great idea? Freelance Journalist Debbie Johnson and Tom Hodgkinson author of ‘The Idle Parent’ join Jenni to debate.
