Health
Treating Eating Disorders in Northern Ireland 08 Jan 2009
What specialist treatment is available?

It is estimated that almost 20,000 people in Northern Ireland are suffering from an eating disorder. In recent years the Department of Health provided an additional £1 million to develop services, and there is now a specialist eating disorder team working in each of the four Health and Social Services Board areas in Northern Ireland. However, there is no specialist in-patient care available and so, in extreme cases, patients have to travel to other parts of the UK, notably London, to receive specialist treatment. Ann McCann, Founder member of the Eating Disorders Association in Northern Ireland and Anne McKenny, Clinical Services Manager, Eating Disorders Team, at the Eastern Health and Social Services Board join Jenni to discuss whether enough is being done.
