Women shop workers and the recession 09 Jan 2009
Shoppers on Oxford St
Is this the first big recession to hit women workers hard?

The last big recession saw swathes of job losses in heavy industry – thousands of men facing the dole. This time it’s different. If you visit Marks and Spencer chances are you’ll be served by a woman. Go to any high street clothes shop and it’s likely to be the same. M & S is the latest firm to shed jobs. It follows the closure of Woolworths and the collapse of Whittards. More bad news on the retail front is expected in the weeks and months to come. Professor Marilyn Davidson from Manchester Business School and Nicola Smith, Senior Policy Officer from the TUC Economics Department join Jenni to ask if women employees are suffering most as the credit crunch besieges the high street?
