Are we putting economic needs before our children's welfare by relying on formal childcare?
An international study published by UNICEF last week warned that parents and governments are taking a "high-stakes gamble" with the longterm wellbeing of children by subjecting them to long hours of formal childcare from a very young age. It recommended that all children should be cared for where possible by parents at home during the first year, and emphasised that children from the poorest homes face the double disadvantage of being born into poverty and receiving sub-standard childcare.
