The life and work of the celebrated Anglo-Irish writer
Elizabeth Bowen (1899 -1973) was one of the most distinguished writers of her generation, best known for classic novels such as The Death of the Heart and The Heat of the Day. She wrote impeccable prose in which she studied the complex nature of love and frustration, demonstrating intense psychological insight. This is evident in her 1932 novel To The North, which has been adapted for this week’s Woman’s Hour drama.
