Should shoplifting be treated as a more serious crime?
Currently those caught shoplifting goods under £200 are given an £80 fine, and provided this is paid on time, do not receive a criminal record. According to the Conservative MP Anne McIntosh this is treating the shoplifter in the same way as a motorist is treated for outstaying their welcome at a parking meter, and sends out the message that shoplifting is not a serious offence. She wants fines to be replaced with jail or community services. But given that many shoplifters are women, what would the impact be of taking a more hard-line approach to this crime?
