Fiona MacKeown 28 Oct 2008
Scarlett’s mother

The murder of fifteen year old Scarlett Keeling on Anjuna beach in Goa on 19th February has been surrounded by confusion and controversy. Scarlett's death was originally reported as accidental drowning by police, but her mother Fiona MacKeown campaigned for the case to be re-examined and a second post-mortem revealed the teenager had been raped and murdered. Fiona has been fiercely criticised for leaving Scarlett in the care of a 25 year old tour guide whilst she went travelling with some of her other children. No-one has been charged with her murder and as a result of Fiona’s campaigning the CBI, India’s equivalent of the FBI, looks set to take on the investigation amid accusations of corruption in the Goan police. Sheila talks to Fiona about the accusations of neglect, her fight for justice and coming to terms with Scarlett’s death.
