A new scheme to keep vulnerable women out of prison
The Solicitor General Vera Baird MP QC is launching pilot schemes in Leeds, Bradford and Liverpool to divert female offenders from the criminal justice system. Selected women will be given an opportunity to accept a conditional caution rather than face a potential prison sentence. In return, they will have to address their offending behaviour at specialist women’s referral centres. Jane Little talks to Vera Baird about how the plans will work, and the prospects for success. |
