International
Afghan radio soap opera 12 Aug 2008
Tales of love, comedy and suffering

“New Home New Life” is an Afghan soap opera modelled on The Archers. It was launched in Peshawar near the Pakistan-Afghan border in 1994. Made by Afghan refugees it was said to be one of the only forms of entertainment the Taliban turned a blind eye to, even managing to influence some of their laws for the better. It is broadcast in both Pashto and Dari with two casts numbering 200 altogether, and provides a lifeline to the many rural, often illiterate, listeners it reaches. Our reporter Felicity Finch, who many know as Ruth from The Archers, visited the project recently, and talks to Jenni about her involvement in the project.
