Women at the front line of the Fire Service

Fire Minister Parmjit Dhanda has recently announced new measures to change the face of the Fire Service over the next ten years and ensure it fully reflects the communities it serves. This includes the toughest ever recruitment targets for women, who currently only make up 3.1% of firefighters. But targets have been set and missed before, and with a new survey suggesting that women don’t have adequate facilities or clothing to do the job, what can be done to encourage them to join? Sheila  discusses the issue with Parmjit Dhanda and Lucy Phillips the Dept Chief Fire Officer for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and Sally Harper Station Manager in the London Fire Brigade and women's representative in the Fire Brigades Union.
