Creating a super-sized salad as performance art
On 24 May the experimental American artist Alison Knowles will prepare, mix, and serve up a giant salad in the Tate Modern in London, throwing the ingredients off a balcony into a super-sized mixing bowl 25 feet below. It’s not a cookery master-class, but a performance designed to challenge the distinction between art and everyday activity. Alison was a founding member of the 1960s Fluxus group of artists that promoted ‘living art’ and avant-garde performance. She tells Jane why she thinks Fluxus ideas are still alive and well today.
