Is the growing number of female vets having a detrimental effect on farming?
Recent figures from the Association of Veterinary Students show that just one in 10 now wants a career as a farm vet compared with one in every two a decade ago. The rapid rise over the past 10 years in the number of young women joining the profession, many of whom prefer the more family-friendly hours of urban practices, is seen as a contributing factor. 80% of student vets are now women, often drawn to the profession by its caring image and the 'Trude Mostue' effect, named after the Norwegian star of the former hit BBC 1 docu-soap Vets in Practice. But is the feminisation of the veterinary industry having an adverse effect on a profession that has for many years nurtured a keen James Herriot macho image. To discuss the issue, Jenni is joined by president elect of the BVA, Nicky Paull. The British Veterinary AssociationDisclaimer
