A hundred years since women won the right to stand as councillors.
This year marks the centenary of the Qualification of Women Act - legislation which gave women the right to stand as councillors in the major towns and cities in England and Wales. But how much did women have to fight for it? What difference did the new women councillors make to local government? And to what extent did it help them gain the right to vote in general elections? Jenni discusses this with Baroness Patricia Hollis, one of the honorary presidents of the newly revived Women’s Local Government Society and Cllr Lesley Clarke, the current leader of Wycombe District Council - one of the first areas in England to elect a woman councillor 100 years ago.Women’s Local Government Society
