Social
Grandparents as parents: failed by the benefits system? 19 June 2007
Lack of support for grandparents taking over the sole care of their grandchildren.

Voluntary groups now estimate some 200,000 children live with a grandparent who acts as a primary carer. According to the former Labour Minister for Welfare Reform, Frank Field MP,  current government policies are putting these families at risk and many of these 'grandparent carers' are being bullied back to work by Jobcentre staff.
Jenni is joined by Frank Field and Terry Rooney MP, Chair of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, to discuss the support for people in this situation, and what the goverment should be doing to help those most at risk. Jenni also talks to grandmother Jan Patterson from Merseyside, about her struggle to care for two grandchildren.
