The greatest roles in musical theatre belong to women.
Women have always had meaty roles in musicals. At the moment in the West End there are several musicals where female characters dominate the story, and where the women’s story drives the plotline. The Sound of Music tells the tale of Maria von Trapp, while Wicked explores the unlikely friendship of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good from The Wizard of Oz. The two female performing murderers in Chicago are a contrast to the 'practically perfect' Mary Poppins. Jane is joined by actress Elaine Paige, writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson and journalist Emma Brockes to talk about women’s roles in musical theatre and discusss why they are invariably written by men.Wicked Chicago Mary Poppins The Sound of MusicDisclaimer
