Family
Cohabitation 9th May 2007
Despite common law marriage being abolished in 1753, the myth persists with more than half of co-habiting couples thinking they have the same rights as a married couple. A recent ruling by the law lords has highlighted once again how differently the courts treat divorcing couples and unmarried partners who split up.

Jenni talks to Anne Barlow - Professor of Family Law and Policy at the University of Exeter and David Allison, Chair of Cohabitation Committee at Resolution (formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association) about the significance of this ruling and how likely we are to see changes to the law as it applies to cohabitees.
