Maureen Freely is best known for writing about family issues, both as a journalist and as the author of six novels. But her latest novel ‘Enlightenment’ tackles another subject that is close to her heart, secrecy and deception in Turkey. Maureen grew up in Turkey in the 1960s, and the novel draws on her experiences. Recently, Maureen has attracted attention as the translator of Orhan Pamuk. She also defended him in court when he was prosecuted under Article 301 for ‘un-Turkish behaviour’. Maureen talks to Ritulah about her love of Turkey and the risks she has taken in publishing her new book.
