Should parents be friends with their children? 02 Mar 2007
Can you be friends with your children and still be a good parent?

The Duchess of York has been photographed partying with her teenage daughters by the poolside. Another mother has been in the news for allowing her eight year old boy to eat his way to fourteen stone. So is being too matey with your kids ever a good thing? Can children actually benefit from having a parent who is in touch with their lifestyle? Or, do over-friendly parents undermine their ability to guide and discipline their offspring?

Martha talks to Michael Bywater, author of Big Babies Or Why Can’t We Just Grow Up? and to Stephanie Calman, founder of 'The Bad Mother’s Club' website and author of Confessions of a Failed Grown-up: Bad Motherhood and Beyond.
