The year of the pig is traditionally a propitious year. And 2007 is the year of the Golden Pig, which occurs only every 60 years, and is even more propitious. Maternity hospitals all over China are braced for a baby boom, as parents try to have a child this year. In 1980 the Chinese government introduced a policy to limit each family to having a single child, although there are exceptions and the policy has relaxed in recent years.
But how will a country that is already home to one fifth of the world’s population cope with this baby boom? Jenni talks to Linda Tsang, a Chinese journalist living in London and to Elisabeth Croll, Professor of Chinese Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies.BBC NewsDisclaimer
