We are forever reading headlines about the latest ‘female viagra’. Trials of a drug which apparently works on the pleasure zones of a woman’s brain have begun, a new testosterone patch will be available in the spring, and there is much excitement about a nasal spray which stimulates arousal. But how well do these medical treatments actually work? Sexual function is thought to be a matter of ‘plumbing’ in men but womens’ sexuality is often thought to be much more ‘emotional’, mysterious and complicated. So is the problem not really a matter of medicine or mystery, but rather that women are too overworked and undervalued to have sex?Dr Petra Boynton
