Minister for women: helpful or detrimental to women? 08 Jan 2007
Last month the Status of Women Minister in Canada stated that she has removed the word ‘equality’ from her programme’s mandate. She also announced that the majority of regional Status of Women offices around the country will be closed, and that advocacy for women’s rights will no longer be funded. The moves have angered women’s groups in Canada, who organised a march to protest. But the changes have also prompted a broader debate. The UK’s Minister for Women, Meg Munn and Judith Squires, Professor of Political Theory at Bristol University join Martha to discuss whether having a Minister for Women removes the responsibility of other government departments to improve the status of women? And do we increasingly need to think about equality of other groups?

The New Politics of Gender Equality by Judith Squires will be published later this year by Palgrave Macmillan.
