Empowering Women through Educating Girls 11 Dec 2006
Helping the world’s women is the best route to helping children. And the best way to empower women is to make sure girls are educated. That’s the message in the UNICEF Report on the State of the World’s Children, published on Monday. So how can girls be persuaded to stay on at school? And what can be done to overcome gender bias in the classroom in developing countries? We hear from a woman who overcame attitudes towards her gender and caste to become a police constable. And Jenni discusses girls’ education with Marie Staunton, head of the charity Plan International, and Gareth Thomas M.P, Under Secretary of State at the Department for International Development.
