Work
Women in the Judiciary 04 Dec 2006
Fifty years ago this week, Dame Rose Heilbron became the first woman judge in England and Wales. Hers was a career of firsts – she was the first woman to sit as a judge at the Old Bailey, the first woman to lead a murder trial, and the first woman Treasurer of Gray’s Inn. She died last December. Her former collegue, Lord Hooson will be talking to Martha about Dame Rose's drive and determination. Martha will then be joined by Her Honour, Judge Frances Kirkham of the Judicial Appointments Commission and Judge Constance Briscoe to discuss how far women have really come in the judiciary, and asking what can be done to make senior judicial posts more representative of gender.
