International
The European Court of Human Rights and Abortion 26 Jul 2006
Two women - one from Ireland and one from Poland - have recently brought legal cases to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The Irish case concerned the right to terminate a pregnancy on the grounds of a lethal foetal anomaly; the Polish case concerned the effect of a pregnancy on the mother's health. As the two cases demonstrate, women are increasingly seeking redress through the European courts; but to what extent can Strasbourg help them? To discuss the issues, Jenni is joined by the barrister Barbara Hewson and Wanda Nowicka, Director of the Polish Federation of Women and Family Planning.
