International
Afghan Moral Police 18 July 2006
As the security situation in Afghanistan worsens and fighting becomes more intense, the Afghan government has decided to do something to tackle what it feels is growing corruption and immorality.

It has approved a plan to reintroduce a Department for Virtues and Prevention of Vice, a body used by the Taliban.  Human rights groups are concerned that this will lead to a return to government oppression, particularly of women.

Jenni Murray talks to Sam Zia Zarifi, Afghan specialist at Human Rights Watch and to Shukria Barakzai, an independent MP in the Afghan parliament about the possible implications of this move for women’s lives as the country struggles to re-build.
