Modern role of the god-parent 30 June 2006
The image of the god-parent has always been a potent one from the bounteous fairy god-mother to the all-powerful god-father in Francis Ford Coppola’s films. So what is the role of the god-parent today?

The traditional notion of them as guardian of the child’s faith looks less and less relevant in our increasingly secular society. Are they simply wealthy benefactors, free babysitters or adult friends in time of need?

Jeanette Winterson has dedicated her latest novel, Tanglewreck, to her two god-daughters and Jeremy Vine is god-father to four god-children. They join Martha to discuss the pleasures and responsibilities of being a god-parent.

Tanglewreck by Jeanette Winterson, Bloomsbury, ISBN 0-7475-8064-2
