Violence and substance abuse in Australia's Aboriginal communities was recently thrust back into the spotlight when Northern Territory crown prosecutor Nanette Rogers went public with horror stories of child rape and abuse of women.
As a result of the revelations the federal government has proposed a national summit to bring together women's groups, government bodies and other social support groups to discuss ways of dealing with the problem. But why does the indigenous community seem unable or unwilling to address the appalling child sexual abuse and domestic violence that is endemic within it? |
