Robert Mugabe's government was re-elected last year in Zimbabwe with an increased majority, despite his so-called slum clearance operation which resulted in more than 700,000 Zimbabweans losing their homes and livelihoods. Life Expectancy has fallen to just 33, and more than half the country's population is on the edge of starvation.
The award-winning foreign correspondent Christina Lamb has reported from the country since 1994 and has made repeated journeys back to the country even after British journalists were banned. She is one of three journalists internationally who are declared enemies of the state by Mugabe's government. Her new book tells the story of Zimbabwe's destruction through the lives of two very different people: Nigel Hough, a white farmer who eventually lost his property to so-called war veterans, and Aqui, their family's black nanny.
