Forced marriages - what is the best help we can give? |

Yesterday a new publicity campaign was launched to reduce the number of forced marriages in Britain and make it clear to victims and those at risk what help is available. Since the Government's Forced Marriage Unit was established in 2000, it has dealt with over a thousand cases of British people being married against their will, but many more cases are believed to go unreported.
Forced marriage can involve kidnapping, sexual, physical and mental abuse, and sometimes even murder if the woman refuses to cooperate. A recent consultation exercise by the government suggests opinion is closely divided about whether a new law is needed to ban forced marriages.
Martha is joined by Jasvinder Sanghera, Director of Asian women's group Karmen Nirvana, and Shazia Kayoom, victim of a forced marriage and Lisa Bandari, Head of the Forced Marriage Unit.
